Dr George Santis MB ChB MD FRCP
Consultant in Respiratory Medicine

Dr Santis received his postgraduate general medical training at London Specialists Hospitals and his specialist training in Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital London and the National Heart and Lung Institute, also in London. He gained experience in all common and rare respiratory problems. In addition to his extensive clinical training, he was awarded prestigious awards to pursue his research training. His doctoral work, at the National Heart & Lung Institute London was on the molecular genetics of cystic fibrosis. He was also the recipient of a prestigious Wellcome Trust Advanced Training Fellowship in Gene Therapy at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Transgene SA, Strasbourg, France. At Guy’s & St Thomas’s Hospitals he leads the Unit for Thoracic Cancers and has established the Endobronchial Ultrasound service for diagnosis and management of thoracic diseases. He also continues his research and academic activities as Head of Department of Asthma Allergy and Respiratory Science.

Mr Tom Routledge MA BM BCh FRCS(CTh)

Mr Routledge attended medical schools at Cambridge and then Oxford Universities, where he won scholarships in medical science. Following this his initial surgical education was in London, followed by five years at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, a national specialist training centre in chest surgery. He trained in both cardiac and thoracic surgery, and was awarded medals by The Royal College of Surgeons’ for excellence as a trainee surgeon.

Pursuing a particular interest in treating cancers with surgery, he then studied for a year at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, one of the world’s acknowledged leaders in cancer operations. Here he learned a number of advanced techniques in treating lung cancer and mesothelioma, to bring back to my consultant practice in the UK.

He is an NHS consultant at Guy’s Hospital in London, providing specialist services to South East London and Sussex.

Mrs Karen Harrison-Phipps BM BCh FRCS(CTh)

After an Engineering degree Mrs Harrison-Phipps attended Southampton University Medical School. She trained in General Surgery and then Cardiothoracic Surgery in specialist units at Harefield, King’s College, and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals. She was the recipient of the McKormack medal for best performance in the 2003 National Cardiothoracic speciality examinatons.

She completed her final year of thoracic training at the Mayo Clinic, USA one of the world’s largest thoracic surgical practices. She learned state of the art surgical treatment for lung cancer, mesothelioma, mediastinal tumours, resection for pulmonary metastases and treatment of complex thoracic cancers such as chest wall resections. Their worldwide reputation led to regular referral of patients with extremely complex thoracic problems such as broncho-pleural fistulae and oesophageal leaks. She also learned that with all thoracic surgery, excellent results and patient comfort and satisfaction are only possible with the correct team and attention to detail. She completed her USA experience at the Cedars Sinaii Hospital, Los Angeles where she learned advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques for thoracic problems.
